The Bath House

Carved into the vaults beneath the house and lit by candle and lantern: a plunge pool of green travertine, a eucalyptus steam room, and five treatment rooms where therapists work in near-silence. The signature two-hour ritual ends with rose tea beside the fire.

The Table

The Walnut Room

Under the original 1927 panelling, chef Élodie Marchand composes a five-course menu from the morning's markets — Cornish turbot, Norfolk quail, and a butter-poached pear that has not left the menu since 1974. Jackets are admired, never required.

The Garden Pool

At the foot of the walled garden, a colonnaded pool is kept at 29 degrees the whole year round. Swim beneath the wisteria in June or through drifting steam in January; either way, a warmed robe and a pot of verbena tea will be waiting.

The House Through the Years

  1. 1927

    The Opening

    Hotelier Lionel Ashworth opens Aurelia House with forty rooms, a ballroom, and a promise printed on the first menu card: “a quiet address in a loud century.”

  2. 1941

    The Long Watch

    The cellars shelter neighbours through the Blitz and the kitchen serves soup to the street. The chandeliers are boxed away — but the doors never close.

  3. 1958

    The Garden Wing

    The walled garden is laid out and the colonnaded pool completed, along with the suite floors and the wisteria that now climbs three storeys every June.

  4. 1996

    The Listing

    The house is listed for its interiors. Craftsmen spend two years restoring the walnut panelling and the gilt cornices of the ballroom entirely by hand.

  5. 2021

    The Restoration

    A meticulous two-year restoration returns every room to its 1927 proportions — original brass, new silence — and Aurelia House enters its second century unhurried.
